Sunil Chhetri’s Candid View on India’s Olympic Situation: “I’m Not Concerned About the Consequences.”

Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has made a bold statement about India’s performance in the Olympics, underscoring a systemic issue with talent identification and development. Speaking candidly, Chhetri highlighted that India’s failure to secure more medals, despite its massive population of 1.5 billion, stems from a lack of effective grassroots programs. Chhetri pointed out that countries like China, the United States, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada, which consistently perform well in the Olympics, have superior systems for discovering and developing athletes from a young age. He argued that India is significantly lagging behind in this regard.

In his remarks, Chhetri addressed the disconnect between potential and achievement, using the example of a talented five-year-old in a remote area who, without proper support, might end up in an unrelated job rather than pursuing a sports career.
