Rohit Sharma has witnessed a notable decline in the ICC Test rankings

Rohit Sharma has faced a significant drop in the ICC Test batting rankings, now sitting at his lowest position since December 2018. According to the latest ICC update on Wednesday, his ranking plummeted nine spots from 15th to 24th, reflecting a notable shift in the standings. This decline marks his lowest ranking in almost six years. Previously, Sharma had dropped to 44th after scoring 63 not out and just 5 runs in a match against Australia in Melbourne in December 2018. His performance improved considerably after scoring twin centuries (176 and 127) against South Africa in October 2019, which propelled him to 17th place in the rankings. Following that, he maintained a relatively stable position until early 2021, when he slipped to 23rd with scores of 6 and 12 against England. Between February 27, 2021, and February 21, 2023, Sharma consistently featured in the top ten, even achieving a career-best rating of 813 and ranking as the fifth-best Test batsman in the world by September 2021. Currently, Rohit’s rating stands at 649, marking the lowest it has been since February 2021, when he had a rating of 626. His recent lackluster performances in home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand have played a role in this significant decline. In the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, he scored only 2 runs and then managed 52, but followed that with disappointing scores of 0 and 8 in Pune. This contributed to India’s first home Test series loss in 12 years.

In addition to Rohit, other Indian players have also seen shifts in their rankings. Virat Kohli has fallen six places to rank 14th, while Rishabh Pant dropped five spots to 11th. Furthermore, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah lost his top position among bowlers, which has now been taken by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. Meanwhile, Pakistan spinner Nauman Ali has entered the top ten among bowlers. Rohit Sharma has witnessed a notable decline in the ICC Test rankings.

Additionally, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal gained one spot, rising to third in the batting rankings, thus displacing Harry Brook. Overall, the latest ICC rankings reflect the dynamic nature of Test cricket and the various performances influencing the standings.
