Rishabh Pant Criticized as ‘Ego Buy’ for LSG, Owner Sanjiv Goenka Explains Rs 27 Crore Bid

Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured him for Rs 27 crore during the 2025 IPL mega auction. The bidding war for the star wicketkeeper-batter was intense, with LSG and Sunrisers Hyderabad competing fiercely. Initially, LSG placed a bid of Rs 20.75 crore, leading to a counteroffer from Delhi Capitals, who used their Right to Match (RTM) card. This forced LSG to increase their offer, ultimately winning Pant with a final bid of Rs 27 crore.Rishabh Pant Criticized as ‘Ego Buy’ for LSG, Owner Sanjiv Goenka Explains Rs 27 Crore Bid.

Despite the eye-watering sum, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka explained that the purchase was purely strategic and not an ego-driven decision. Goenka emphasized that Pant was an integral part of the team’s plans and that the franchise had budgeted specifically for him. He clarified that there was no vanity or personal pride involved in the bidding process. “This was not about vanity at all. Ego nahi hai [There’s no ego here],” Goenka told Cricbuzz.Rishabh Pant Criticized as ‘Ego Buy’ for LSG, Owner Sanjiv Goenka Explains Rs 27 Crore Bid.

LSG had a clear strategy going into the auction, and Pant fit perfectly into their plans. Goenka highlighted that the franchise had budgeted carefully, spending significant amounts on other key players, such as Avesh Khan (Rs 9.75 crore) and Akash Deep (Rs 8 crore), to build a balanced team. Goenka pointed out that the costliest acquisition, Pant, was just one part of the bigger picture, which was focused on creating a solid squad rather than securing the most expensive player. “This does not mean very much to the franchise. Eventually, it’s about performance and how the team balance looks,” Goenka added.Rishabh Pant Criticized as ‘Ego Buy’ for LSG, Owner Sanjiv Goenka Explains Rs 27 Crore Bid.

In total, LSG purchased 19 players, retaining five from the previous season, including key players like Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mohsin Khan. Pant’s acquisition stands out as the most expensive, followed by Avesh Khan and Akash Deep. With a likely opening partnership of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, which isn’t considered the strongest in the competition, much responsibility will fall on Pant and Pooran to deliver for the team in IPL 2025.
