Najmul Hossain Shanto was born 25 August 1998 in the city of  Ranhat in Rajshahi, commenced his cricketing journey at the Clemon Rajshahi Cricket Academy. The academy, situated nearly 20 kilometers away from his home, necessitated a daily cycle and walk to reach, showcasing Shanto’s early dedication and passion for the sport. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, he tied the knot with Sabrin Sultana Ratna, marking a significant personal milestone.

Najmul Hossain Shanto Domestic Career

Shanto’s initial foray into the Twenty20 (T20) arena occurred on November 8, 2016, when he represented Comilla Victorians in the 2016–17 Bangladesh Premier League. His domestic career soared in December 2017, when he and Mizanur Rahman set the record for the highest opening partnership in a domestic first-class match in Bangladesh, amassing 341 runs while playing for Rajshahi Division against Dhaka Metropolis in the 2017–18 National Cricket League.

In the same season, he emerged as the leading run-scorer in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, accumulating 749 runs in 16 matches. His performance earned him a spot in the Khulna Titans squad for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. Shanto’s dedication was further evident when he was included in a training camp ahead of Bangladesh’s 2019–20 season. Subsequently, he was selected to play for the Khulna Tigers in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League.

On December 8, 2020, Shanto etched his name in the records by scoring a century for Minister Group Rajshahi against Fortune Barishal in the 2020–21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup. However, his most remarkable domestic achievement came in November 2022 when he became the highest run-scorer in the 2022–23 Bangladesh Premier League, accumulating 516 runs and winning the player of the tournament award.

Najmul Hossain Shanto International Career

Shanto’s international journey started to take shape in November 2016 when the selectors included him in a preparatory squad for training in Australia before Bangladesh’s tour to New Zealand. In January 2017, they also added him to Bangladesh’s Test squad for the second Test against New Zealand, ultimately marking his Test debut on January 20, 2017.The all-rounder continued to impress, earning a spot in the preliminary squad for Bangladesh’s 2018 Asia Cup campaign. On September 20, 2018, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Afghanistan.

He was selected for Bangladesh’s team in the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Subsequently, after a brief absence, Shanto returned to the national team for the 2019–20 Bangladesh Tri-Nation Series. Furthermore, his T20 International debut came on September 18, 2019, against Zimbabwe.

Notably, Shanto assumed the captaincy of Bangladesh’s squad in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where he demonstrated his leadership skills. He also led the Bangladesh team to a gold medal victory in the men’s cricket tournament at the 2019 South Asian Games.

In April 2021, Shanto scored his first Test century with an impressive 163 runs against Sri Lanka. He followed this up with another Test hundred in July 2021, this time against Zimbabwe in Harare.

Recent Performances

Shanto’s consistent performances led to his selection in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. During the tournament, he scored his maiden half-century in T20I cricket against Zimbabwe, contributing to Bangladesh’s victory.

In March 2023, he played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s series against England, registering his maiden half-century in ODI cricket. His scintillating performance helped Bangladesh secure their first-ever T20I victory against England, highlighting his significance to the national team.

In June 2023, Shanto etched his name in history by becoming the second Bangladeshi to score two centuries in a Test match, achieving scores of 146 and 124 in a one-off Test against Afghanistan.
