IPL broadcaster Star Sports has refuted accusations from Indian captain Rohit Sharma
IPL broadcaster Star Sports has refuted accusations from Indian captain Rohit Sharma that it aired the audio of a personal conversation involving him, which he claimed was a breach of privacy. This dispute arose after a video, initially shared by Kolkata Knight Riders, showed Rohit discussing his future with Mumbai Indians alongside KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. The video, which went viral on May 11, was later removed by KKR from their social media.
On May 16, before a match against Lucknow Super Giants, Rohit was seen speaking with Dhawal Kulkarni and asked the broadcaster to turn off the audio when he noticed cameras were directed at him. He accused Star Sports of airing a private conversation, but the channel denied this in a statement.
According to Star Sports, the clip from the May 16 training session at Wankhede Stadium, where they had authorized access, only showed Rohit requesting not to record his conversation’s audio. They asserted that no audio from this conversation was recorded or broadcast and the clip had no significant editorial relevance beyond this.
Rohit emphasized the importance of restraint in recording on-field moments to maintain trust between fans, cricketers, and the sport. Star Sports reiterated their commitment to protecting players’ privacy while delivering intense action and preparation moments to fans.
