On Day 2 of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa in Dhaka, Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was part of an unusual moment during the 69th over of South Africa’s innings. Dane Piedt, facing Mahmud, struck a low full-toss back towards the bowler. Mahmud attempted to deflect the ball onto the stumps with his right hand, but while non-striker Kyle Verreynne was safe, Piedt mistakenly attempted a risky run and quickly turned back. In a bid to secure a run-out, Mahmud threw the ball but inadvertently struck Piedt, disappointing the Bangladesh fielders.Bangladesh Bowler Misses Run-Out, Accidentally Hits Batter With Throw in Unusual Incident.

South Africa posted 308 in their first innings, led by a superb century from wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who scored 114 with eight fours and two sixes. Verreynne’s resilience gave South Africa a first-innings lead of 202 after Bangladesh had managed only 106 in their opening innings. Verreynne’s notable contribution included a record seventh-wicket stand for South Africa against Bangladesh, adding 119 runs alongside Wiaan Mulder, who scored 54. Resuming at 140-6, the duo stabilized South Africa’s innings and helped them reach a competitive total. Bangladesh Bowler Misses Run-Out, Accidentally Hits Batter With Throw in Unusual Incident.
Mahmud delivered an impressive spell in the morning session, picking up two wickets in consecutive balls during the 65th over. His delivery to Mulder, on the off stump, induced an edge that was safely caught by Shadman Islam at slip. The following ball, an exceptional reverse-swinging delivery, uprooted Keshav Maharaj’s off stump. Mahmud ended the innings with 3-66, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed with figures of 2-63, ultimately concluding South Africa’s innings by stumping Verreynne after 144 balls.

South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada had earlier made headlines, becoming the fastest bowler to reach 300 Test wickets, breaking Pakistan legend Waqar Younis’ previous record. Rabada’s two quick wickets left Bangladesh struggling at 19-2 by tea on Day 2, still needing 183 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Shadman Islam was caught at short leg in the third over, and three balls later, Mominul Haque edged one to Wiaan Mulder, who took a sharp catch at third slip. Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam also reached a milestone, surpassing 200 Test wickets, becoming only the second Bangladeshi bowler to achieve this after Shakib Al Hasan. Taijul finished with 5-122 in South Africa’s innings. Bangladesh, who have yet to secure a Test win over South Africa, will play the second Test of this two-match series in Chattogram on October 29.
