Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is facing criticism for a controversial remark made during live commentary of the India vs. New Zealand match in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. While discussing the Indian women’s cricket team and their coaching staff, Manjrekar commented that he doesn’t have a strong awareness of players from North India. This comment was made when he was unable to recognize Munish Bali, a former Punjab player and the team’s fielding coach. He stated on-air, “Sorry, I could not recognise him. North ke players ki taraf mera zyada dhyaan nahi hota” (I don’t pay much attention to players from North India).

His remark sparked a backlash on social media, with users expressing outrage and calling for accountability. This incident highlights the sensitivity around regional biases in sports commentary, especially when discussing representation in women’s cricket.
In the match itself, New Zealand secured a convincing 58-run victory over India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. New Zealand, opting to bat first, scored 160 runs for 4 wickets in their 20 overs, led by Sophie Devine, who contributed a notable 57 runs off 36 balls. Renuka Thakur Singh was India’s standout bowler, finishing with figures of 2 for 27.

India’s response was disappointing, as they were bowled out for just 102 runs in 19 overs. Rosemary Mair was particularly effective for New Zealand, taking 4 wickets for only 19 runs.

A significant moment of controversy arose during the final ball of the 14th over. After Amelia Kerr hit a delivery from Deepti Sharma and took a single, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur collected the ball but did not throw it back immediately, as the umpire had called the end of the over. Meanwhile, Sophie Devine attempted to run for a second run, prompting Harmanpreet to quickly throw the ball to the striker’s end, resulting in Kerr being run out. However, the umpire ruled the ball dead, declaring Kerr not out, which visibly frustrated Harmanpreet.

This incident, along with Manjrekar’s comments, has sparked conversations about respect and awareness in sports commentary, especially regarding the representation of players from different regions. The reactions on social media reflect a growing expectation for commentators to be more mindful and sensitive in their language and attitudes.
