Rohit Sharma’s T20 World Cup-winning team visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence before heading to Mumbai for more celebrations.
The Indian team’s T20 World Cup 2024 festivities included a stop at PM Modi’s residence on Thursday. After arriving in New Delhi around 6:00 AM, they freshened up at the ITC Maurya Hotel, where they were warmly welcomed. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, performed a brief dance and cut a special cake before departing for the Prime Minister’s residence.
At approximately 1:00 PM, the team left PM Modi’s residence for Delhi airport, en route to Mumbai for further celebrations.
Prime Minister Modi had previously congratulated the team via phone after their victory last Saturday. The team’s schedule included breakfast with PM Modi.
The players were set to catch a 2:00 PM flight to Mumbai, where an open bus parade was planned. BCCI secretary Jay Shah and Rohit Sharma urged fans on social media to gather in large numbers for support. This celebration is particularly special for the 37-year-old Rohit, a Mumbaikar and a fan favourite orite in the city. A similar event took place 17 years ago when Dhoni’s team defeated Pakistan in the final of the inaugural 2007 World T20 in South Africa. Though tired, the team was excited and waved to fans with warm smiles. Suryakumar Yadav, who made the sensational catch to secure the final win, was especially animated in his responses to the crowd. Rishabh Pant, who returned to international cricket at the event after a life-threatening car accident, saluted the crowd, while pacer Mohammed Siraj blew flying kisses.
Rohit Sharma and Player of the Final, Virat Kohli, who both retired from T20Is after the campaign, were among the last to leave the VIP exit. Rohit proudly displayed the trophy for fans, while Kohli acknowledged their support with a thumbs up.
Some fans had been waiting since the previous night to see their heroes in person.
“We have been here since last night. Winning this World Cup was crucial after losing the ODI World Cup last year,” said a group of fans. The team secured India’s second T20 world title, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.
